Tall tails are told all the time about pets, but we’re here to help you debunk one about our pet’s dental cleanings!

THE MYTH:

Some people say that anesthesia-free dental cleanings are safe for your pet.

THE TRUTH:

The process of scaling a pet’s teeth while they are awake is painful and can be scary for them.

It’s also not effective. A thorough oral evaluation and treatment can only be performed under anesthesia.

Fear-Free

At Brook Farm Veterinary Center we are obsessed with pets and the love we feel for animals drives us to do our very best.  We’ve modified our procedures, handling, and facilities to help your pet feel safe and comfortable while receiving care. Our staff receives regular training on Fear Free techniques and handling in order to ensure that we evolve as new research develops.  We create a relaxing environment by using calming colors, pheromones, and soft lighting wherever possible.  Scentless pheromones are used throughout the entire practice in order to help pets feel safe and secure when encountering potentially stressful situations. These pheromones promote a sense of safety for pets by synthetically mimicking the scent their mothers emitted at birth.

Dental Health = Overall Health

When it comes to your pet’s dental health, regular dental care is critical.  We encourage you to introduce daily tooth brushing at home and get at least one professional dental cleaning each year. During dental cleanings here at Brook Farm Veterinary Center, we remove tartar from the teeth and under the gum lines, which will prevent infection and bone loss. Keeping teeth clean and gums healthy is the best way to ensure your pet keeps those pearly whites forever. It’s important to know that dental disease in dogs and cats is super common. If left untreated, dental diseases can lead to major problems like heart disease and kidney failure.

Will We Use Anesthesia?

Yes, your pet will be under full anesthesia.  In addition to keeping your pet out of pain and discomfort, this will protect your pet’s airways while our team uses sharp instruments and a steady flow of water into your pet’s mouth.
